The Scholar and the Last Faerie Door Review

Overall Review/Rating

This was a very in the middle of the road kind of reading experience and book for me.

H.G Parry’s writing abilities are great. I didn’t really have any qualms with what was on the page and how the sentences were strung along.

It was just really fucking boring.

Going into this, I didn’t outright recognize this was a dark academia book. I like dark academia but it’s not something I read all too often. But I thought I knew how to spot it. This book is heavy on the academia. It made me miss learning and the pursuit of knowledge. So it gets kudos for that.

But that was the only emotion it made me feel. I kind of just felt like I was meandering through the plot. Things were happening but they were only semi exciting. There was nothing that was really hooking me into the characters or their experience. The only exciting thing was the twist but even that lost it’s luster after a couple pages.

Everything about this book was just okay. Nothing grand or exciting. Just okay. Maybe it’s because I had just got gone reading Blood Marked and that was super fast paced and exciting. It was a hard switch to go from a high speed car chase to a Sunday afternoon walk with grandma.

I don’t really have much else to say about this book. My rating is still a solid 5. Maybe 6 on a good day but I just don’t think this was it for me.
