Grill Off

Korean BBQ and I go way back.

And by way back I just mean 2 years lol. But I do like 4 years of yearning to try it. So yes, I think you could say we are old friends.

Normally we have a usual haunt that we’ve been going to. They have some really nice kimchi, amazing wings, and many memories of me being drunk off 2 bottles of assorted soju.

But it was a Friday and it was sunny, and the soju of another called to me that night.

After some intense love making, I wanted to eat. The original plan was to our seafood boil place since it had been a while, but it was graduation weekend and it was packed. I suggested that we try a new Korean bbq joint that just opened up. While I love our usual place, it’s not really good for the grilling method unfortunately.

Also the new restaurant was closer and I’ve been reallllly wanting to check this place out.

It’s an all you can eat buffet style that gives you an hour and a half to eat for $31. There is a 20% fee if you don’t finish your food but I feel like the amount of time that they give you is more than enough.

It was a good atmosphere and the staff was very nice. They asked if we had ever done any type of grilling before and if we had any allergies. You do have to scan a QR code in order to access the menu but there is internet that you can connect to. Ordering was pretty easy and food came out relatively quickly. The portions were a decent size. It gave me room to try different items while getting a nice taste of what I was trying. The only problem is splitting 5 shrimps between 2 people. However, we are real lovers and baby birded the each other. Surprised we didn’t get kicked out.

Anyway, great time. I would totally go again. I would highly recommend their lemon pepper and cajun shrimp and lots and lots of kimchi!!!

And yes, I did get relatively tipsy on 2 bottles of soju.

What’s your favorite soju flavor?

Shepard’s Pie

I’m starting to learn that me and potatoes don’t have a good relationship.

I love to eat them and they love to be eaten by me but they make it so hard.

I was feeling rather festive today since it’s St. Paddy’s Day. Normally I would make a corned beef inspired dish but I didn’t have time to go out a buy any but more importantly, I got a root canal done last week on Thursday so I can only eat soft foods. It definitely limits a lot of what I can eat and I was advised potatoes in any form would suffice just fine.

I’ve never made a Shepards pie but I’ve eaten one. It was pretty good and it looked fairly easy to make. I’m starting to learn on my cooking adventure that the easier it looks to make, the harder it actually is.

Like every meal that I decide to make, I had to go grocery shopping right away after work. I looked at a recipe but I didn’t follow it to a T. I knew I had most ingredients at home save for the ground beef, the potatoes, and the veggies. Basically everything important I needed lmao.

I feel like there’s always that one thing you can’t find when you’re buying ingredients for you meal, at least in my case there always is. I’ve gotten better at improvising and substitutions for my meals, so I’m glad that I’m becoming a stronger cook but god damn.

I found everything relatively quickly. The potatoes were good, however I knew I was going to have problems when I looked at the ground beef they had left. In this household we are strictly 80/20. I love my fat, it adds to the flavor and I will accept nothing less. Except I had to today because there was literally nothing left but 90/10. I was dejected but the show much go on.

I had planned on using canned veggies since I was lazy and didn’t want to do any more chopping or cutting than I needed to. Also I’ve been playing a modded Minecraft server and that has been taking up a lot of my time. I’ll get more into that on another post though.

Right so, canned veggies and less chopping. I found the green beans and corn easy enough but I feel like it can’t be a Shepard’s pie if there’s no carrots.

And just like the chicken broth fiasco, there were no canned carrots.

I could’ve just gotten fresher carrots in the produce section but you’re talking to a Minecraft fiend so I was not open to the suggestion at all. I just had to have fucking canned carrots.

Once again I found myself, thankfully on a much nicer sunnier day, patrolling the street for carrots. I checked the first corner store by my home and found none. I already suspected they wouldn’t have any, I’ve never seen any there but a girl was hoping.

I made the trek with a sack of potatoes in tow up the street to the other corner store I knew. To my dismay and my aching arms, there were no carrots there. But they had mixed veggies so I took those as payment.

me on da porch after trekking for something so fucking meaningless like carrots #firstworldproblems

Making it was not that hard. My only problem was with the beef that I choose. I like to season things. You’ll never find anything bland in our house. But this meat and I were fighting. I knew I was using adequate seasoning but whenever I tasted it, it just tasted bland. Bland enough to where I had to ask my boyfriend to taste test and step in. We tried adding butter to meat so that it would add more fat. It worked a little bit but I didn’t want to try anymore as my meat was getting over cooked.

I didn’t even sweat the mashed potatoes. I could make that shit in my sleep. However I underestimated how much butter we had left so I had use to maragine halfway through. Aint nothing wrong with margarine, I just don’t really like cooking with it all too much. It’s my god given right for my butter to taste like it should kill me. I’m a crocker. I love Country Crock butter guys. It’s more than just a spread to me. Anyway, I use heavy whipping cream, butter, sour cream, salt, pepper, garlic salt, and more butter just to be safe when making my mashies.

Even though I went through all that hard work for those 2 cans of mixed vegetables, I didn’t end up using them. Stupid, I know right. But imagine if you were me, making a Shepards pie for the first time but everyone is hopping on Minecraft without you. You’d skip it too.

The recipe I was following was hard as shit to read when it came to preheating the oven and baking it. I had to stand there and reread that shit 10 times while I was getting fucked by creepers, zombies, and skeletons. I found 425 to be suitable for my oven. The recipe said I didn’t have to cover it with foil so I personally didn’t. I probably should have, it wasn’t dry or anything like that but it probably would’ve made the top more golden.

It was cool to make, my only regrets would be the beef and the lack of carrots. I should’ve just taken the time to cut the carrots instead of taking the easy way out. The normally tastes better when you put more effort into it.

An effort was made and it was good, I would probably rate it a 6/10.

Sausage and Potato Soup

I love soups.

I love broths, stews, and anything in between. You can make anything into a soup tbh. There’s something about warm liquid flavorful liquid going your throat that’s just so comforting.

I’ve made soups before but it’s just the usual beef stew or chicken noodle. I was really hankering for new. I’m growing tired of just eating chicken and beef, I wanted to try cooking with some meats I don’t normally cook with but enjoy eating. I wanted something hearty and healthy.

I decided on sausage cause it’s one of those I felt like I could utilize more. I only eat it during breakfast but I’m trying not to be so limiting with my food.

Receipe was fairly easy, I’m not a savant in the kitchen. It was my first time chopping an onion by myself, I was pretty proud of myself tbh. The ingredients weren’t too difficult to find either. You can use any sausage, I got whatever normal kind they had the store. Don’t normally cook with Dijon mustard, I used it as a replacement with the mustard seasoning or powder the recipe called for. All the other seasoning I had cause they’re staples in my house lmao.

Was pretty baked during the whole cooking process but it was fun.

It was such a cute soup. Incredibly meaty as well since I bought like 2 pounds of meat. It definitely does help to soften the veggies in the butter before hand. I used a lot of butter but it added a really great flavor.

I didn’t have all the ingredients initially. I was under the impression that we had chicken broth but I didn’t know that my boyfriend had used it all the in the recent beef stroganoff that we had. Of course the weather was fucking awesome for that trip. No joke, it was like 1 degrees outside. I went to the corner store by my house because it was too cold to walk to any other stores and I didn’t want to ask my boyfriend to bring any on his way home because I wanted it to be a surprise what I was making. I was also mid sausage cooking when all of this was happening.

The one time I need chicken broth, the corner store is out...

I searched the store for like 5 minutes and I couldn’t find anything. This was pre new glasses mind you, I can’t see for shit. I was about to give up when the cashier asked me if I was looking for something and he helped me find it. It was right where I thought it was but it was the cubes. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with using bouillon cubes, I just ain’t ever used them. I bought 2 containers of those and still walked up the street to another local corner store/bodega to see if they had the container that I wanted. I don’t know why the container mattered so much to me. It literally didn’t fucking matter at all, I had the broth that I needed but I guess I was just nervous about trying something new.

That store didn’t have the container I wanted either…

They had the cans. I’ve been to this store before soooo many times, they always had the container that I wanted. I was mad as fuck and cold, but I still bought the can kind anyway.

Thankfully the house didn’t burn down while I was away but I did miss Way We Do It by Gee Lee on shuffle 😦

The rest of the cooking process wasn’t bad. It’s a soup so it does most of the work. I think it only took like close to an hour maybe less to cook everything. The hardest part about making it for me personally letting it thicken up. You would think having to go outside in that shit would be the worst of it, but it smelled so good that I almost couldn’t wait.

All in all, it was pretty fucking good. I had 2 servings which doesn’t happen often with anything. Definitely would advise taking a lactaid if you’re gonna make it since it has heavy whipping cream in it. Would definitely make it again. I think next time I’ll make it with egg or buttered noddles, I feel like it could pair well with those.

Let me know if you liked it or if you went a different direction with it in the comments!!
